Iran Issues Threat to Americans Warning 'Nowhere is Safe'
WASHINGTON-- Iran on Friday issued a sweeping threat to target tourist sites worldwide, raising alarms as spring break travel ramps up across the United States.
In a statement broadcast on state television, Iranian military spokesman Gen. Abolfazl Shekarchi warned that locations typically seen as safe — including parks, recreational areas and major tourist destinations — could become targets.
“Based on the information we have about you, even parks, recreational areas and tourist destinations anywhere in the world will no longer be safe for you,” Shekarchi said, without identifying specific locations.
The warning comes at a moment of heightened travel, with millions of Americans heading to popular vacation spots, and is likely to intensify concerns that Tehran could expand its response beyond the Middle East. Analysts have long warned that Iran could rely on asymmetric tactics, including attacks on soft targets, to exert pressure on its adversaries.
U.S. officials say they are already on heightened alert. The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI have increased monitoring in the weeks since U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran triggered a broader conflict three weeks ago.
The latest threat also coincides with a continued U.S. military buildup in the region. Officials said this week that three additional warships and roughly 2,500 Marines are being deployed to the Middle East, bolstering forces already in place. While no decision has been made to send ground troops into Iran, the move expands the Pentagon’s capacity for potential operations.
President Donald Trump said Thursday that he is not currently planning to deploy U.S. troops, adding that if such a decision were made, it would not be announced publicly.
