Iran Threatens Retaliation After US Attack on Missile Launch Sites

WASHINGTON — Iran threatened retaliation Tuesday after the United States carried out military strikes against targets linked to Tehran, escalating tensions in the Middle East and prompting fears of a broader regional conflict.

Iranian officials condemned the attack as a violation of international law and warned that the U.S. would face “serious consequences” for what they described as an act of aggression. State media reported that senior military leaders were meeting to discuss possible responses, though officials did not immediately specify what actions Iran might take.

The Pentagon said the strikes were conducted in response to what U.S. officials described as ongoing threats to American personnel and interests in the region. Defense officials said the operation targeted facilities allegedly connected to Iran-backed militant activity, but declined to provide detailed information about the scope of the attack or the damage caused.

President Donald Trump defended the strikes during remarks at the White House, saying the United States “will not tolerate attacks on Americans or threats from the Iranian regime.” He warned Tehran against further escalation but said the U.S. was prepared to respond if necessary.

“We acted decisively to protect American lives,” Trump said. “Any retaliation against the United States will be met with overwhelming force.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused Washington of inflaming instability across the region and called on the United Nations Security Council to condemn the attack. Iranian military commanders vowed that any response would come “at a time and place of Iran’s choosing.”

The developments triggered concern among U.S. allies and international leaders, many of whom urged restraint amid fears the confrontation could expand into a wider war involving Iran-backed groups across Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and the Persian Gulf.

Oil prices rose sharply in global markets following the strikes, reflecting concerns about potential disruptions to energy supplies and shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical corridor for global النفط exports.

In Israel, officials said they were closely monitoring the situation and placed security forces on heightened alert amid concerns that Iranian proxies could launch retaliatory attacks in the region.

The latest escalation follows months of rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, including clashes involving Iran-backed militias, maritime incidents in the Gulf and disputes over Iran’s nuclear program.

Members of Congress from both parties called for briefings from the administration. Some Republican lawmakers praised the strikes as a necessary show of force, while several Democrats questioned whether the administration had adequately consulted Congress before launching military action.

The White House said additional military assets had been repositioned in the region as a precaution, though officials insisted the United States was not seeking a broader war.

Despite those assurances, analysts warned that the risk of miscalculation remained high.

“This is one of the most dangerous moments in U.S.-Iran relations in years,” said one regional security expert. “Even limited retaliation could quickly spiral into a much larger confrontation.”
