Rubio Warns Iran's 'Insane in the Brain' Leaders: 'Do Not Test Trump'

WASHINGTON-- Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday cautioned Iran’s leadership against provoking President Donald Trump, warning that the United States is prepared to respond forcefully to any escalation amid already heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to Europe, Rubio said Iranian officials should “take seriously” the administration’s posture following a series of recent confrontations in the region, including maritime incidents involving U.S. naval forces and Iran-backed groups.

“This is not an administration that is going to be tested lightly,” Rubio said. “If Iran chooses to escalate, there will be consequences.”

Rubio did not detail specific U.S. response options but emphasized that military and economic tools remain on the table. His comments come as the Trump administration continues to balance pressure on Iran with signals that it remains open to negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program.

Tensions have climbed in recent weeks following reports of skirmishes in key waterways and renewed concerns over Iran’s uranium enrichment levels. U.S. officials have accused Iran of backing proxy forces responsible for attacks on commercial shipping and regional allies, allegations Tehran has denied.

Iranian leaders have in turn warned Washington against what they describe as “provocative” actions, including the continued presence of U.S. warships in the region and expanded sanctions targeting Iran’s energy sector.

Despite the rhetoric, both sides have indicated a willingness to return to talks under certain conditions. Trump said earlier this week that Iran “wants to make a deal,” though he added he was “not satisfied” with the terms currently under discussion.

Rubio echoed that stance, saying diplomacy remains an option but must be approached “from a position of strength.”

“We’re not seeking conflict,” Rubio said. “But we are not going to allow Iran to believe it can act without consequence.”

Analysts say the latest exchange underscores the fragile state of U.S.-Iran relations, with both governments attempting to project resolve while leaving the door open for negotiations.

The State Department said it is continuing to coordinate with allies in Europe and the Middle East to monitor the situation and deter further escalation.
