Top General: Iran Attacked US Forces 'More Than 10 Times' During Ceasefire

WASHINGTON-- A senior U.S. military official said Tuesday that Iran and Iran-backed forces launched more than 10 attacks against American troops during a recent ceasefire period, underscoring the fragility of efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.

The top general, speaking to reporters at the Pentagon, said the attacks included a mix of rocket fire, drone incursions and indirect fire targeting U.S. positions in Iraq and Syria. While most of the strikes were intercepted or caused limited damage, the official said they represented a clear pattern of continued aggression despite the pause in hostilities.

“During what was supposed to be a ceasefire environment, we saw more than 10 separate attacks on U.S. forces,” the general said. “That raises serious concerns about Iran’s intent and the degree of control it exercises over affiliated groups.”

No U.S. fatalities were reported, though several service members were evaluated for minor injuries and possible traumatic brain injury following some of the incidents, according to defense officials.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran following a series of maritime clashes and retaliatory strikes earlier this year. The Biden administration had supported a temporary ceasefire arrangement aimed at reducing violence involving Iran-backed militias across the region.

U.S. officials have long accused Iran of providing weapons, training and intelligence support to proxy groups operating in Iraq and Syria. Tehran has denied directing attacks on U.S. forces, maintaining that regional militias act independently.

The general declined to specify which groups were responsible for the latest attacks but said the tactics and weapons used were “consistent with prior Iran-backed militia activity.”

“We retain the right to defend our forces,” the official added, noting that U.S. commanders have responded to some of the incidents with targeted defensive strikes.

The Pentagon said it continues to assess the situation and coordinate with regional partners to deter further attacks while maintaining pressure on militant networks.

Analysts say the reported violations highlight the challenges of enforcing informal ceasefire arrangements in a region where multiple armed groups operate with varying degrees of autonomy.

Despite the incidents, U.S. officials have not formally declared the ceasefire void, instead emphasizing efforts to prevent a broader escalation while keeping diplomatic channels open with Tehran.
