Trump: Netanyahu ‘Will Do Whatever I Want Him to Do’ on Iran

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “will do whatever I want him to do” regarding Iran, a striking assertion about the U.S.-Israel relationship as tensions with Tehran continue to intensify across the Middle East.

Trump made the remarks during an interview and later reiterated that the United States and Israel remain closely coordinated on military and diplomatic strategy involving Iran’s nuclear program and regional activities.

“We’re on the same page,” Trump said. “Netanyahu understands the stakes, and he’ll do whatever I want him to do when it comes to Iran.”

The comments immediately drew criticism from foreign policy analysts and Democratic lawmakers, who argued that Trump appeared to portray Israel as acting under direct American political control while escalating rhetoric against Tehran.

White House officials later attempted to soften the president’s remarks, saying Trump was emphasizing the “strong alignment” between Washington and Jerusalem rather than suggesting operational control over Israeli decision-making.

“The president was underscoring the unprecedented level of cooperation between the United States and Israel on the Iranian threat,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. “Both nations remain committed to preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.”

Netanyahu’s office did not directly address Trump’s wording but released a brief statement reaffirming Israel’s commitment to “close strategic coordination” with the United States.

Iranian officials condemned the comments, calling them evidence of what Tehran has long described as coordinated aggression between the U.S. and Israel.

“The Zionist regime and the United States continue threatening regional stability through arrogance and intimidation,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said in remarks carried by Iranian state media.

The comments come amid heightened tensions following recent military exchanges involving Iranian-backed groups in the region and renewed concerns over Iran’s nuclear enrichment activities. U.S. intelligence officials have warned that the risk of broader regional conflict has increased substantially in recent months.

Trump has taken an increasingly hardline approach toward Iran during his second term, expanding sanctions and warning repeatedly that military action remains an option if Tehran advances toward a nuclear weapon.

Some Republicans praised Trump’s remarks as a demonstration of American leverage and close ties with Israel. Others privately expressed concern that the rhetoric could inflame tensions at a delicate moment in the region.

Democrats criticized the president for what they described as inflammatory and overly personal language involving a key ally.

“Foreign policy is not about public displays of dominance,” Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., wrote on social media. “These kinds of comments risk further destabilizing an already dangerous situation.”

Trump and Netanyahu have maintained a close political relationship for years, though their alliance has occasionally faced strains over ceasefire negotiations and differing approaches to regional diplomacy.

Despite those differences, the two leaders have remained publicly united in opposition to Iran’s nuclear ambitions and support for militant proxy groups throughout the Middle East.
