US and Iran Receive Last-Ditch Ceasefire Pitch from Mediators to Draw America Back from Brink of Nuclear War

WASHINGTON-- The United States and Iran have been presented with a last-minute ceasefire proposal that could take effect as early as Monday, as a deadline set by President Donald Trump for a negotiated resolution rapidly approaches.

A framework for a potential truce was drafted overnight by Pakistani officials and shared with representatives from both Washington and Tehran, according to a source familiar with the talks. The proposal outlines a two-phase approach: an immediate cessation of hostilities followed by accelerated negotiations aimed at securing a longer-term peace agreement.

“All elements need to be agreed today,” the source said, underscoring the urgency surrounding the effort.

Pakistan has emerged as a key intermediary in the high-stakes diplomacy. Its army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, was engaged in intensive overnight discussions with Vice President JD Vance, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, the source said.

Under the proposed framework, an initial ceasefire would include the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical global transit chokepoint that has been at the center of escalating tensions. That step would be followed by a 15- to 20-day window to finalize a comprehensive agreement, with in-person negotiations expected to take place in Islamabad.

Iranian officials have indicated they are seeking a permanent ceasefire arrangement that includes firm guarantees against future military action by the United States and Israel. Any final deal, according to the framework under discussion, would likely require Iran to commit to abandoning efforts to develop nuclear weapons in exchange for sanctions relief and access to previously frozen financial assets.

The diplomatic push comes as Trump’s self-imposed deadline for a deal nears its end. In a post on Truth Social over the weekend, the president reiterated his warning that failure to reach an agreement would trigger severe consequences.

“Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT,” Trump wrote. “Time is running out – 48 hours before all Hell will reign [sic] down on them. Glory be to GOD!”

Meanwhile, hostilities in the region appear to be intensifying. Explosions were reported Saturday at a major Iranian petrochemical facility, with Israel claiming responsibility. Israeli leaders have reportedly directed the country’s military to expand its target set to include Iranian “economic targets,” a strategy aimed at inflicting what officials described as “massive financial damage” on the government.

Iranian state media also reported an attack on the Bushehr nuclear power plant—the country’s only operational nuclear facility. The strike damaged a perimeter wall and left at least one person dead, according to reports, while staff at the plant were evacuated as a precaution.

The latest developments follow earlier warnings from Trump that the United States could escalate its military campaign if Iran does not move swiftly to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The president has repeatedly emphasized the strategic importance of the waterway, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.

In another social media post, Trump suggested that discussions were underway with what he described as “a new, and more reasonable, regime” in Iran, while touting progress toward a potential resolution. At the same time, he issued a stark warning that expanded beyond previous threats focused primarily on military and energy infrastructure.

“Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately ‘Open for Business,’ we will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet ‘touched,’” Trump wrote.

With the deadline looming and military activity continuing, the proposed ceasefire framework represents a narrow and rapidly closing window for de-escalation in a conflict that threatens broader regional and global consequences.
