Watchdog Group Requests Detail Records on Kash Patel Citing 'Concerning' Reports of Alcohol Abuse
WASHINGTON-- A government watchdog group is seeking new records related to FBI Director Kash Patel, pointing to recent allegations about his conduct and leadership as grounds for greater transparency.
The Democracy Forward Foundation (DFF) announced Tuesday that it has filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the FBI, citing claims detailed in a recent Atlantic article titled “The FBI Director Is MIA.” The report raises concerns about Patel’s alleged alcohol use and his availability to carry out the duties of leading the nation’s top law enforcement agency.
“If the Director of the FBI is a liability, the American people need to know,” DFF President and CEO Skye Perryman said in a statement. She added that the allegations, if accurate, would go beyond a personal matter and instead raise serious questions about whether the bureau is being led with the discipline and reliability required for the role.
“News reports suggest that his level of drinking and absentee leadership are not just inappropriate, but potentially damaging to the integrity of one of the most critical institutions in our government,” Perryman said. “This is about whether the FBI is being managed with the seriousness the position demands.”
According to The Atlantic’s reporting, multiple current and former officials from the FBI and the Department of Justice described Patel’s alleged drinking as an ongoing concern within federal circles. Some sources told the publication that his security detail at times struggled to wake him, believing he may have been intoxicated, while others said early-morning meetings were occasionally delayed due to late nights.
Patel has strongly denied the accusations. On Monday, he filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic, disputing the claims and challenging the publication’s reporting.
In its FOIA request, DFF is asking the FBI to release records related to Patel’s official schedule, including his use of vacation time. The group is also seeking internal communications from members of his security detail, specifically messages that reference any difficulty contacting or waking the director.
Founded in 2017, the Democracy Forward Foundation describes itself as a nonpartisan legal organization focused on accountability and democratic institutions, though it has ties to Democratic political operatives. The group has frequently used FOIA requests and litigation to obtain government records across multiple administrations.
Under FOIA, federal agencies are required to disclose certain records upon request, although exemptions exist for reasons including national security, personal privacy, and ongoing law enforcement matters. It remains unclear how quickly the FBI will respond to the request or whether any of the materials sought will be withheld under those exemptions.
The filing adds another layer of scrutiny around Patel’s tenure, as questions raised in media reports now intersect with formal efforts to obtain documentation from within the bureau itself.
